Client Course Description
Old Oaks Country Club was organized in 1925 as an offshoot of the Progress City Club located in Manhattan. Thereafter, it was successively known as Progress Country Club, Purchase Country Club, Pine Ridge Country Club, and again Purchase Country Club.
A.W. Tillinghast was the architect of two golf courses for the Progress Country Club. The 9-hole course, which was built first, no longer exists, its land being required for the construction of Interstate Highway 684. The 18-hole course remains to this day as one of the finest golf courses in Westchester County.
In 2016, the club began a massive renovation project by world-renowned architect Rees Jones and his design associate Steve Weisser. Known as the “Open Doctor” for his tweaking of the US Open course for the USGA, Rees set out a plan to elevate the already world class Old Oaks golf course.
The Club has hosted the USGA’s US Open Qualifying Tournament several times, as well as the Metropolitan Golf Association’s Senior’s Tournament.
Designer Notes
In 2016, Rees Jones and Steve Weisser implemented a long range master plan and a complete renovation of the golf courses while also updating the golf course features to today’s standards.
The team at Rees Jones, Inc. began by reconstructing every bunker on the course, and then added multiple tee boxes so the golf course can be better enjoyed by golfers of all abilities. An additional 200+ yards of length from the back tees was found, stretching the course to over 6,900 yards while maintaining a par of 70. Every golfer, from beginner to professional, enjoys the course improvements. Following the course renovation was a complete reconstruction of the practice range, adding 50% more tee space and cleaner looking targets. A construction of a 3-acre short game area has also been completed, elevating already exceptional practice facilities to an even higher level. Old Oaks now has 2 full length grass driving ranges, several pitching and chipping greens, practice bunkers and a large putting green.
